History of Walnut Creek
The first persons to inhabit the area known as Walnut Creek today were Bay Miwok Indian tribes. However, the town was not officially founded until 1849 by a man named William Slusher. Slusher named his small settlement the Corners. During these early years, the Corners consisted of a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a small grocery store and a handful of private dwellings.
It was in the late 1800s when the town's name was changed to Walnut Creek, and a post office was established in the community. Walnut Creek saw major growth in the early 1890s when the Southern Pacific Railroad ran tracks through the town. In October of 1914, Walnut Creek was incorporated as a city of California.
